The Montreal Canadiens have scheduled a Monday afternoon news conference, at which time Jacques Martin is expected to be named the club's new head coach.
The Montreal Gazette has reported that Martin will leave his job as general manager of the Florida Panthers to take over behind the bench for the storied franchise.
Montreal general manager Bob Gainey guided the club after the March 9 firing of Guy Carbonneau. The Canadiens finished just 6-6-4 down the stretch, losing their last four games of the season, and snuck into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 41-30-11, taking the final spot in a tiebreaker with Florida.
Boston then eliminated Montreal in a four-game sweep in the first round.
